PEL Supply is a worldwide distributor of orthopedic and prosthetic equipment and supplies. Following a SKU analysis, the company turned to Sedlak to optimize its distribution facility.

Project Objectives/Challenges

All distribution was handled through a single facility that faced capacity constraints.

The facility needed to be reconfigured to maximize effective use of space and develop plans for expansion.

What Sedlak Did

Our team developed an appropriate facility design and operational methodologies for the current and future expansion space to meet distribution requirements well into the planning horizon. Specifically, we recommended enhancements to receiving, storage, picking, packing and shipping functions:

  • Identified the maximum capacity of existing space
  • Determined the need and size of an additional footprint, including whether to build a mezzanine or remain on one level
  • Developed an optimal facility layout and product flow
  • Determined what level of WMS capability and RF technology was justified


Operational enhancement recommendations focused on improved throughput, service and costs.

The facility expansion plan provided optimal size, layout and equipment and included specifications and bid packages for the building, material handling equipment and systems.

We provided a requirements document outlining supporting IT systems and technologies.
