VWR International is a global laboratory supply and distribution company. VWR enables research via distribution of a diversified product line to pharmaceutical and biotech companies.
VWR needed assistance in consolidating operations from its Brisbane and San Dimas facilities into a greenfield distribution center that would support long-term growth and increased efficiency.
The company engaged Sedlak to develop an appropriate facility concept and material handling design for combined operations in the new distribution center.
What Sedlak Did
We conducted a data analysis and business discovery assessment of existing operations at the Brisbane and San Dimas locations and identified areas for improvement.
Design criteria were developed based on product characteristics, order volumes and service level requirements.
Our team held workshops and interviews to develop material handling equipment requirements and evaluate facility layout concepts.
Existing pain points were prioritized for resolution and improvement in the new design.
The layout supported specialized rooms – e.g., low humidity, specific temperatures, and raised floor.
Our design for the facility layout and operations plan maximized the effectiveness of the proposed material handling system and included a two-stage implementation plan that balanced investment with planned growth.
VWR was provided with a description of operations that included required WMS functionality and staffing requirements.
Our team reviewed the security plan to ensure access/egress by different work groups to all areas, and worked with the real estate group to identify the optimum construction footprint on a specific site.
