Operations Redesign and Facility Retrofit

Following consolidation of two large businesses, each with its own complex distribution network, Sedlak was engaged to develop an efficient operation to handle large volumes across multiple sites with an 8-hour pick day and expand next day fulfillment of late-day customer orders at lowest distribution cost.

What Sedlak Did

  • Evaluated more than 50 equipment and operations methodologies for receiving, storage, picking and shipping functions.
  • Simulation validated recommendations and helped fine-tune peak day options.
  • Developed equipment specifications and evaluated vendor bids to find best providers.

Facility Upgrade Project Management (Multi-Year Engagement)

Client engaged Sedlak to provide onsite project management support for the implementation of material handling equipment (MHE) upgrades across multiple U.S. facilities (greenfield and retrofit).

What Sedlak Did

Provided specification reviews and MHE bid evaluations.

Oversaw contractor selection and onsite management of significant tenant improvements/building modifications to accommodate new MHE.

Managed primary equipment installation and enhancements of compressed air, data and electrical feeds, lighting, and equipment modification and refurbishment.

Handled onsite vendor management, including vendor selection, onsite installation management, tenant improvements, testing and commissioning.

Worked closely with client’s resources to maintain communication and project progress.

Results

The new distribution center operations model was replicated network-wide:

  • Enabled handling of large volumes during a narrow 8-hour picking day
  • Expanded ability to accept late-day customer orders for next morning delivery
  • Network achieved higher overall througput with fewer facilities
