Project Objectives/Challenges

Benjamin Moore commissioned a distribution network study to answer strategic questions and to develop a long-term, cost/service-focused distribution blueprint:

  • Are current distribution centers (DCs) in the optimal locations to service the dealer network?
  • If not, what are the optimal DC locations for both service and cost?
  • Does Benjamin Moore need more/fewer DCs to achieve improved service and cost levels?
  • Are the dealers serviced by the correct DCs today?
  • What other opportunities exist to improve distribution operations (e.g., organization, processes, technology, etc.)?

What Sedlak Did

Through site visits, interviews, and extensive data analysis, Sedlak attained a thorough understanding of the current network and requirements.

Determined the scope included the entire network of manufacturing plants, DCs, warehouses, dealer locations and retail stores.

Modeled 30-plus network and transportation scenarios that included variations of current and candidate sites while maintaining strict service standards and suggested operations improvements that complemented the revised network.

Results

Identified over $5 million in savings in an optimal network that included a mix of current sites and new sites.

Developed a long-term distribution roadmap that identified near-, mid-, and long-term initiatives in an implementable sequence through the planning horizon.

Launched immediate capacity improvements at regional DCs.

Strategy phase rolled into new facility design phases for West, Atlantic, and Canada regions.

Teed up a full assessment of dedicated fleet sizing and optimal routing.
